On June 5, 1945, at approximately 10:37 a.m., a group from the Vianden bomb disposal unit was clearing mines near Rodershausen at the location “Am Hereck.” As worker Ardent N. slid his mine detector down a slope to cross a small stream, worker Jean Klein slipped past him. Just as Klein reached the stream, worker Jean Schannes, on the other side, triggered an S-type mine. The explosion killed Klein instantly and severely wounded Schannes. He was taken to the hospital in Eich, where he died on June 7.
