KRANZENHOF: A terrible accident occurred last Friday at the neighboring Kranzenhof farm. Three days earlier, an eighteen-year-old farmhand from Ettingen, near Karlsruhe, had started working there. While working in the fields, he found a grenade at the edge of the woods, which he picked up and took back to the farm. As he was about to unload it, and the farmer approached with his young daughter, the farmer warned the farmhand emphatically to put the dangerous explosive device down. The farmhand, however, ignored the warning, reassuringly stating that the grenade was no longer dangerous since the detonator was missing and that he would be careful. No sooner had the farmer and the child moved a hundred paces away, fortunately in the opposite direction, than a terrible explosion shook the entire area. The farmer, rushing to the scene, found his farmhand’s body horribly mutilated. The windows, doors, and roof of the building had sustained significant damage. The Vianden gendarmerie arrived immediately at the scene of the accident to conduct the necessary investigations and assessments. The family, who were notified immediately, took the necessary steps, in conjunction with the authorities, to arrange for the repatriation of the body. On Monday morning, in the presence of authorities from both sides, the body crossed the border near Vianden for burial in the family homeland.
