On August 3, 1945, a detachment of the Steinheim demolition squad was clearing mines in the village of Hamicht near Bolendorf. At approximately 9:30 a.m., worker Pierre Merens stepped on an S-mine, which immediately exploded. He and worker Paul Berg, who was standing next to him, were killed instantly.
