ECHERNACH: Five weeks ago, we celebrated a solemn thanksgiving service to honor the fortunate fact that God had returned all the children from abroad to our sorely troubled village. Our joy was not to remain unclouded for long. We were deeply saddened by the news that one of our best, Martin Sabus, had given his young life in service to our rebuilding homeland. A mine unexpectedly felled him near Echternach. Martin was an exceptionally kind young man who always sought to bring joy to others and was therefore highly regarded by everyone and a welcome presence in society. Having already given his life for his homeland in the Maquis, he was determined not to spare himself during the reconstruction. He served in the auxiliary police and took on the life-threatening command of a demolition squad, where he now sacrificed his life for his homeland at the prime age of 23. On Tuesday, not only our youth, but the entire parish will demonstrate that it knows how to honor its heroes.
